Follower count barely matters to AI answers.

Half the people AI assistants quote have under 10,000 followers. Expertise, not reach, decides who gets cited.

Threshold card: half the people AI assistants quote have fewer than 10,000 followers.
In short

In Meltwater’s analysis of 9.5 million AI citations across six assistants, 51% of the people quoted had under 10,000 followers, and 72% of quoted content was original writing rather than reshares. AI answers are built from named people writing original things, not from the biggest accounts. For leaders starting from a small following, citation is winnable.

The finding

AI assistants are quoting people, not companies, and follower count barely matters. Meltwater looked at 9.5 million AI citations across six assistants over four weeks. Of the LinkedIn content the models quoted, 75% came from individual profiles and 25% from company pages. The part that surprises most comms teams: 51% of the people being quoted had under 10,000 followers, and 72% of what got quoted was original writing, not reshares.

Why small accounts win

Reach is not what the models are selecting for. When a buyer asks an AI about a field, the answer gets built from named people who have written original, specific things in credible places. A large following built on resharing gives a model nothing to quote. A small following with a genuine position gives it exactly what it needs. The mechanics reward substance in a way the feed algorithm never quite did.

What this changes for executive programmes

The usual objection to starting an executive visibility programme is that the leader has no audience yet. In AI answers, that objection mostly dissolves. The leaders we scan are rarely absent because they lack followers. They are absent because they have published nothing original under their own name for a model to lift. That is a production gap, not a popularity gap, and production gaps can be closed deliberately.

How we think about it

We read this study alongside what we see in our own visibility scans: the executives being quoted are the ones with a steady record of original, expertise-dense writing, whatever their follower count. The playbook that follows is in AI answers quote people, not pages: put real expertise on the record, under a real name, regularly.
